I just got home from an interview with a possible employer for my internship, and she immediately offered me the job.

I also apparently passed the English Writing Proficiency exam (university exit exam). So yay!

Heading to Arizona tomorrow. I always love taking trips out there. <3 <3 <3

Yeah... sorry if you don't celebrate Thanksgiving.

So anyone have any plans for next week?

Like the last six years, I'm having dinner with my boyfriend's family. I actually can't remember the last Thanksgiving I spent with my family.

I definitely spend Christmas with them before we make the trek out to Arizona to see Brandon's relatives.

Anyway, I love Arizona. There's a lot to do (well, if you're into hiking and exploring), and it's a great get-away for a while.

I've been in Arizona since Saturday. Internet access is hazy at best since we're using my beat-up laptop with a busted LCD screen.

Since Brandon's aunt is always demanding things can't happen without her and she wants to throw her own Thanksgiving in her new house back in California, we have to wait to have Thanksgiving on Friday. Kinda puts a damper on some road trip plans we made for that day with Brandon's mom, but we'll try doing them tomorrow. It'll kinda suck since I'm sure a lot of things will be closed.

Oh well. There's always Christmas break.

So we're doing our Thanksgiving celebrations today. The aunt who insisted on holding everything today so she could have her own dealie on Thanksgiving Day back in California is running late.

Brandon and I have been watching the "Back to the Future" trilogy in HD, so it's not all bad.

Having just been in the snow yesterday while hiking a dormant volcano I have this crucial, yet fairly obvious piece of advice:

SCARVES ARE YOUR BFFS.

Get a big fluffy one and wear the hell out of it.

I get along fine with a coat, a hoodie underneath, jeans and boots, but my god... scarves are like towels in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy universe.

I spent my Thanksgiving on an insane road trip yesterday doing several different hikes and ended up eating chicken fried steak in a bar on Route 66 as our "official" Thanksgiving dinner.

The actual turkey and mashed potato massacre happens today for us. Huzzah...

Reading "Bread Givers" for a class. I'm supposed to be done with it already, but I've been distracted.

It's pretty much about a semi-autobiographical story about an immigrant girl in turn-of-the-century New York learning to survive on her own. I've only dedicated one night to reading it and I'm about a fifth of the way through it.

Fuck whoever reported the front license plate on Brandon's car stolen. It's fucking there. We've been pulled over three previous times for this with the cops acting as though we stole the car.

Saturday night, we got stopped at the border with guns pointed at us by two California officers who think they're bad asses. Fuuuuuun...

Seriously, it's really amusing getting lectured on how that stolen plate report needs to get fixed (it's in the DMV's hands, folks) while the cops point out every other time they open their mouth that they had their guns drawn right at our heads.

Oh, and fuck family members who bring drama to every holiday function and act as though everything is always about them.

Fuck coming home tomorrow to my aunt from the Bay Area who's going to be living in my house for the next couple weeks. The woman is a bitch.

Thank you, all the businesses that were open on Thanksgiving day, including the T.G.I. Fridays we ended up eating dinner at 5 minutes before it closed that night because we were starving and they were cool about seating us and getting us food quickly.

Thank you, Arizona park rangers, for being really cool people even having to work Thanksgiving, especially the geeky one working the volcano crater park north of Flagstaff. You saying, "What the frak!" about the cold made me smile.

Thank you, Brandon's family, for taking me into your heart and always making me feel welcome at holiday celebrations. It means a lot to me since Thanksgiving with my dad's side always feels like my mom and I are ostracized for not being white, while Thanksgiving with my mom's side is usually an informal party with cigarette smoke-tasting processed food that all came out of boxes.

Thank you, Sara's new therapist, whom I hear is trying to take over the rape investigation and get this guy convicted. She's been helping Sara through her night terrors and sleep walking issues that really kicked up after the incident. Sara really likes this woman and I'm glad to hear it.

Holy shit. The worst I ever had was driving through Texas and having the car suddenly start spinning in the middle of the road. Thankfully, everyone stopped and we didn't hit anyone. But yeah, my boyfriend at the time did all the things you supposedly aren't supposed to do. He was hitting the brake, turning away from the skid, and all that and somehow managed to survive.

Saw episode 4 while out in Arizona. I'm intrigued by the direction they're going, but they did get back on track with the books at the end of the episode.

The Dixon Brothers (as far as I know) aren't in the books, but Amy and Andrea are.

I mean, you're not making Olive Garden management your career so why worry so much about it? It's not the very best you can do, but maybe it is for him?

Yeah, we've all had to work with pricks in one form or another. But at least you got yours officially documented as discriminating against you.

Seriously, though, if you're interested in going to school for something else, I think you should really go for it. Leave the children with their petty drama and do what you want to do.

Tough call. I mean, REALLY tough. I guess going off of this year alone, getting to sit and talk with the creators of steampunk about their friendship with Philip K. Dick and anything else they wanted to talk about for a couple hours. So much comes to mind that was really exciting.

Last year, it might have been knife throwing lessons and getting a bullseye with an axe.

I dunno. It's really hard to choose.

I'm sorry, but that just made me think of Chris Rock's rant about women who despise other women at their work and say "Dynasty"-like phrases like, "She's trying to destroy me!" when they work jobs that could easily be left for another (Source material).

I can understand pride in your work, no matter what sort of job it is, but it's not a permanent gig.

Hey, if you want to stay at these stores and restaurants, more power to you, but I think if you're interested in something else and there's bullshit to deal with here, why are you shouldering a burden while your eyes are on another prize?

I've dealt with all kinds of shit in every job I've ever had: office politics, us-and-them attitudes, people not carrying their weight, pointless gossip and drama, sexual harassment, people getting violent with one another, etc. Yeah, there is often someone I've had to work with who was simply too shitty to be around, but I've kept to my work, gave it my all, and moved on to the next job in line.

I realize that not everyone is interested in going to school or doesn't have the means and that it's important to at least like your job. I'm not advising to quit, but to at least look into the avenues you want to break into. Find something that really fits for you and make it happen.

I was writing an ethnography for my upper division American studies theory class and have been pounding my head against the wall the rest of the day.

You definitely weren't forgotten, I just suck at posting.

Heh, I think I'm the only person who posts in this thing any more.

Week-long trip to Arizona was fun, but all too short. Some days we did little and went to a place here or there and other days were filled with visiting all sorts of different places.

Today was spent writing a 10-page mini-ethnography and tomorrow I've got another 10-page paper due on journalism ethics plus a query letter assignment for another comm class. Then there's working on this insipid group project over the weekend that's due next week. FUCK.

Next week is our last week of classes, and then we've got finals. Hooray for the next shit-ton of writing assignments due within a short period of time. This semester's been a widowmaker, I tell ya.

On the plus side, I've got an internship nailed down. And the boyfriend and I have the house all to ourselves while the parents are in South America. Hopefully tonight isn't so cold.

I'm kind of impressed with my luck.

A little over two weeks ago I was in tears worried about my internship and how I need to do one next semester to graduate on time. Over the course of that week, I shot e-mails to editors all over the place and had friends on the inside at a few papers, but wasn't getting many response back quickly.

Then this woman came into my features class to talk about her magazine and casually mentioned that she does internships that count for academic credit. I grabbed one of her business cards, she interviewed me that Friday and offered me the internship.

Cool.

Now I just need to finish the two papers that are due today. *Resumes banging head against the wall*

I wish this were true. I wanted it so badly to be true.

It's like when we found out the dry erase quitting girl was just an actress.

Either way, it's still hilarious to think this could happen.
