It's time again to count my blessings. I'm way behind on that.

- I've managed to keep to my ongoing resolution to try/learn one new thing a day and thus far it's been interesting. I've tried lots of different foods, gone to a lot of different places, and I've picked up a few new skills in the past month.

- My birthday past a couple weeks ago. Went to a playground, an arcade and the market in Little Tokyo that are probably gone by now since the Koreans are taking over, an old cemetery, and got my parents to go to a Mediterranean restaurant and try all sorts of food. There's more, but I think I've already killed that topic.

- Because my mom was so excited trying out new foods she hadn't tried, I'm thinking of taking her to this Peruvian place Brandon and I love.

- I participated in LiveJournal's Down the Rabbit Hole Day a couple days ago. Since it takes the fun out of it by telling people why you're writing all sorts of insanity, I think I bewildered a lot of my friends list.

- I finished a couple books that had a few sweet little moments between lovers tucked in.

- In the last month, Brandon and I saw a pod of dolphins while standing on a pier and a tree full of caterpillars, cocoons, and monarch butterflies.

- My mom and I have been scoring a lot of great deals on food at the market lately. Thank you, depression era nostalgists!

- Went to the farmer's market for the first time in years and was amazed by how many people were there (the place was nearly deserted most weekends). Got a ton of free samples of fruits, dates, and such.

- Started school again this week (not a very happy thought at the moment, but at least I'm here and finally pounding out that degree).

- Brandon's birthday is on Saturday. We're probably going to hit up the Chinese New Year and Tet festivities around L.A. Still deciding on where to go for dinner.

There's probably more, but I gotta head across campus for my media ethics class.

I used to be terribly afraid of vacuum cleaners, lawnmowers, and weed-whackers. I kept thinking they were all instruments of torture that when I got to close to them, they'd hurt me.

Have you ever watched a documentary on someone, got most of the way through it, and became annoyed that this person is considered note-worthy enough to have a boring documentary about them?

*In answer to my own question, I was watching a doc on comedians, they got to Joan Rivers and she had a very stupid bit about the 9/11 widows getting checks for $5 million. Her comment was pretty much that your husband was not worth anything, so how nice is it that now you have $5 million and no husband? She kept going on about how smart and edgy she was in the after-interview.

There's a difference between being smart/edgy/saying something that everyone's thinking and just being a fucking bitch, Joan.

I guess they're just not my cup of miscellaneous caffeinated beverage.

There's just something about Sookie. She's too perfect. Telepathic, virtuous waitress whom all the charming, debonair vampires are head of heels for or otherwise deeply fascinated in. Feels like a Mary Sue.

Eh, I guess teen lit has a ton of characters like that.

I was reading the Bloody Jack books, but after I finished the third book, it felt like the lead female character had become more and more of a Mary Sue. I kinda feel compelled to read the other three books, but I'm actually really annoyed with it. Hmmm...

It's really funny to me how people keep talking about how he's a representative of black people everywhere.

He's a representative of MY people: the bi-racials.

People think being half-and-half makes it so you're "accepted by everybody," which is FAR from the truth.

At long last I see a president who collected comics and probably had to check the box marked "OTHER" whenever he had to write in his ethnicity, just like I do.

*Loving sigh*

What's up with the bar, though? I'm one post away and it's still showing only 2/3rds.

EDIT: Heh, and now looking at my profile, it doesn't look so text-heavy as apparently the goal disappeared.

Apparently these are pictures from the upcoming Super Bowl ad they're going to put on:

I love how they made Bennet look like Tom Landry.

A lot of new viral images are being spread from this Flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thenewfrontiersman/

Empire Magazine is also showing off some exclusive portraits of the cast: http://www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=24083

And as Photoshop'd as some of these look, they're apparently putting out licensed costumes: http://watchmencomicmovie.com/012609-watchmen-movie-costumes.php

So... how long before we can get a copy of "Watchmen Babies in V for Vacation"?

WOOHOOOO!! My mom's biopsy results came back and the lump that she found a few weeks ago is just scar tissue. No presence of cancer cells!!

Everything else sort of fades into the background.

I got straight As last semester, with an A+ in history. Actually I was surprised to get one for my American Studies class since it was based heavily on the midterm, final, and class participation grade.

Saturday was Brandon's birthday. Took him around L.A. Saw the costumes from The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones, and a whole lot of other movies from last year. We hung around Chinatown for a time to watch the New Years parade and eat dim sum. Took him out for some phenomenal barbecue for lunch, cracked a confetti egg on his head while we ate our jam-filled churros, and then for dinner with my parents we had some Peruvian food. Mmmmm...

Sunday, took my mom for free day at a museum that was also have an African festival. It helped get my mom's mind off the lump.

On Monday, Brandon's aunt and newly-acquired uncle took us out for Greek food for dinner. Soooo much food. And oh how the wine did flow.

Yesterday and today have been a bit blah, but I am quite content that I just made my own cornbread and broccoli cheddar soup from scratch for dinner.

I think I'm gonna lie down now.

Posted on 02-10-09 04:51 PM, in "What Happened to all the Nice Guys"? Link
Admittedly I did forgo a couple nice guys in high school, however, because I was dating someone for 4 years and I for some strange reason maintained the relationship because I had convinced myself that this was it--no one else would ever want me and if I didn't hold onto this long-term, long-distance relationship I'd be alone forever (Yes, I know... I was a HUGE idiot at that age and still have a ways to go before I'm walking on water).

It doesn't help that my then best guy-friend and I are pictured on the couples page of our senior yearbook. And rather than go to prom or any other dances, he and I hung out at a diner, eating pie with friends. Wherever he is, I hope he's found someone and is happy.

Now, in argument to the article, I've met tons of "nice guys" who act like the above, but beneath that layer are complete assholes.

Exhibit A: My ex, Steve. He was oh-so-sweet, balding, and 30. He was your typical nice guy, he constantly offered to buy things for me (I lost count of how many times in the month we were dating that I picked up a CD or whatever and he'd jump forward declaring, "You like it? I'll buy it for you!!"), opened doors for me, and all that jazz.

But once you made one sarcastic remark, no matter how in-good-fun a comment was, he erupted, shouting, "What's that supposed to mean?!" and what have you.

He flipped out over everything. Whenever another guy was around, he swore I was checking him out and smiling at them, even if I seriously spent the entire time staring at the ground. If any sort of male spoke to me, he's swear they were hitting on me and I was a bitch for not telling them to fuck off.

I've never in my life asked such a stupid question as "Why aren't there any more nice guys?" That's silly. What's more what are you doing sifting through bars and clubs? Go to a comic book convention and you'll meet 30,000 eligible bachelors who'll worship the group you walk on if you'll watch Star Wars with them.
