Trying to steer clear of the whole "Today, in case you've forgotten, is ..." ridiculousness all over the Web today, it's easy to trip over the hoards of greetings and blog/e-mail subject lines that read off as follows: "Happy Patriot Day!!"

A park near my house is having a festival and concert to celebrate Patriot Day ala 4th of July.

Why did this day need to be considered a holiday? Why was it given a name--and "Patriot" of all things which makes it sound as though those who died on this day 6 years ago were fighting the good fight and so on and so forth? They were civilians who were killed, not soldiers giving their last breath to defend their country.

Last year I happened across a memorial service that was being held in a neighborhood near Zoso's apartment. Along with the speeches and the gospel choir coming to sing and support a family who lost one of their loved ones was a girls' choir which sang a song composed for the occasion which had verses that went on about "God smiles on our country" and "the firefighters died to save our democracy."

Wait, what? Umm...

While I know apathy has set in pretty hard for most people when it comes to discussing Sept. 11, I just don't see why a day like that should be called something like "Patriot Day" and be celebrated. Like Hurricane Katrina, Pearl Harbor, and even the Holocaust it's something to be remembered, not celebrated.

Anyone have any thoughts on the subject? Sorry to all of the non-U.S. people who I'm sure are tired of hearing about this.

Though I hate using it as a reference for Debate (since anyone can change it), Wikipedia has a small blurb about Patriot Day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Day

EDIT: Had to fix the link.

I don't follow anything MTV does or raves about, but apparently Britney Spears opened for the video awards show this past weekend. From what I heard it was supposed to be her grand comeback, but she was rather lethargic and sluggish on stage and her lip-syncing was off or whatever.

I dunno.

I don't care.

But my LiveJournal friends page has been filled with people commenting about how bad it was. Among the comments was this video, which popped up multiple times (hell, it's only a day old and has over a million hits).

This guy is apparently very serious about Britney (it's so serious in fact I question if it's real or just a grab for views and attention):

EDIT: Here's a vid of the performance he's referring to people over-critizing (EDIT 3, changed out the old for one that works):

EDIT 2: Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton has already put out his own spoof of this video:

I found this recent parody through the original "Britney fan's'" YouTube account. In his "Recent Ratings" section he gave the Perez Hilton vid one star.

According to some folks, the original commenter is a satirist, but he's mentioned in numerous places that he was serious with this video.

I figured that would go down any time considering how MTV's been sweeping through YouTube pulling these videos down claiming copyright and such. They're probably going to release the video to those who pay them to see it since they know people are combing the 'net to see this without having seen the awards show when it aired.

EDIT: Apparently this video's been making the rounds through CNN, Howard Stern, The View, it was on the local radio stations where I live and I'm sure it's made the news in many other places as well.

Anyway, the guy in the video, Chris Cocker, was on a radio show (I'm still checking on where this station is) that just sort of blow up around him. Here's the interview, it might be considered explicit for some, so be careful who you listen to this around: http://majordouchebag.com/audio/crocker_monsters.mp3

Just got word that the radio station that broadcast that interview was from Florida.

I've seen a few of his videos. They're okay, but not really something that would have warranted media attention. Even this one was more something to be passed around for shits and giggles.

Oh well, his 15 minutes started 2 days ago. He'll fade soon enough.

EDIT: I put in another video of the performance. Let's see if this one gets pulled for copyrights too.

I don't know what's going on in this video.

So many are speculating that Pluto was playing tag or something of the nature playing with the kid and an adult interfered, taking the entire interaction the wrong way and pushing Pluto.

Many are saying that he fell off the curb. And others, who are in the minority, are saying this was completely sinister.

You will notice, though, Pluto isn't actually making an effort to catch the kid. He's keeping a consistent distance away from the kid. If he really wanted to catch him, he probably could have done it quite easily.

According to the person who uploaded the video, Pluto went to get a Disney employee and the "fight" was settled peacefully.

I dunno. It probably wouldn't have escalated to much if the woman with the camcorder didn't pull the Pluto aside. Then again, I wonder what her tape looks like.

Bored. Someone on LiveJournal posted another of these. Figured I'd do it.

1. Who was the last person to call you baby?
- Probably Nelson, my high school boyfriend. That's just not something I'm called otherwise.

2. When shopping at the grocery store, do you return your cart?
- Usually.

3. If you had to kiss the last person you kissed, would you?
- The last person being my current boyfriend? Yeah.

4. Has someone ever sang a song to you?
- Yeah. There were a couple guys in high school who used to call just to sing and play guitar for me.

5. Do you play Sudoku?
- Not usually. I don't understand why it's so trendy right now.

6. If abandoned alone in the wilderness would you survive?
- Probably. At least long enough to find civilization or be found.

7. If your house was on fire, what would be the first thing you would do?
Call 911, make sure everyone's safe (including my cat and bird), then start running around like a nut trying to save various things of sentimental value.

8. Who was the last person you shared a bed with?
- Brandon/Zoso. But he practically lives with me, so it's pretty common.

9. Who do you text the most?
- I don't text, really. It costs too much with my plan; however, rarely, but occasionally I'll send pictures of Christina's baby to Christina.

10. Who last said they loved you?
- Brandon.

11. What color are your eyes?
- Brown.

12. How tall are you?
- Supposedly 5' 6"

13. Do you like your parents?
- I love my parents.

14. Do you secretly like someone?
- Does Basch count? OK, it's not a secret, but he doesn't know that.

15. Why did your last relationship end?
- Mutual break-up over distance.

16. Who was the last person you said you loved on the phone?
- My mom.

17. Favorite ex-Beatle?
- I don't know. Ringo? He was Mr. Conductor of Shining Time Station. I don't follow the Beatles at all.

18. Where was the furthest place you traveled?
- France.

19. Do you like mustard?
- YES! Especially honey mustard, but I love regular yellow on A LOT of things.

20. Do you prefer to sleep or eat?
- I'm a fatass for a reason, but also I personally feel that sleeping wastes a lot of time.

21. Do you look like your mom or dad?
- I resemble my mom more, but you can see elements of my father.

22. How long does it take you in the shower?
- Regularly, 5-7 minutes. On one of those a-good-shower-can-fix-anything sort of days, 20 minutes, maybe.

23. Can you do splits?
- Never have been able to.

24. What movie do you want to see right now?
- In theaters: "Beowulf," in 3D, in IMAX.
On DVD/at home: The new "As You Like It" that just came out and BBC's "Much Ado About Nothing."

25. What did you do for last New Year's Eve?
- Was at a gathering at Junkie's house and then went over to Marty and Becky's for Voidcrush's party.

26. Do you think The Grudge was crappy?
- Well, it wasn't as good as Ju-On, that's for sure. Then again, they just mimicked the damn movie.

27. Was your mom a cheerleader?
- Nope.

28. What's the last letter of your middle name?
- E.

29. How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
- I've been getting somewhere between 4 and 6 lately.

30. Do you like care bears?
- No preference.

31. What do you buy at the Movies?
- If I do ever buy anything it's a soda with no ice.

32. Do you know how to play poker?
- Yes.

33. Do you wear your seatbelt?
- Usually, but I haven't lately since Zoso's last car didn't have working seatbelts and I haven't gotten back in the habit of putting them on.

34. What do you wear to sleep?
- Most of the time the clothes I wore that day. Sometimes I change out for a larger shirt and no pants.

35. Anything big ever happen in your town?
- Nothing really happens, although when I was a year old a plane crashed on the other side of town, on a street with the exact same name as my street. Our family and friends all thought my parents and I were dead. Ironically, we were in L.A. at the time and when my parents heard about the crash, they also thought our house was gone.

36. Is your hair straight or curly?
- It's frizzy wavy.

37. Is your tongue pierced?
- Nope.

38. Do you like Liver and Onions?
- I've never even tried it.

39. Do you like funny or serious people better?
- Both are nice to have around, really.

40. Ever been to L.A.?
- Just about every weekend.

41. Who or what is on your mind right now?
- The wisdom tooth that's growing into my cheek needs to be pulled RIGHT FUCKING NOW. It hurts like a bitch.

42. Any plans for tonight?
- Voidcrush, Brandon's band, is playing at some naughty nurse bar in Venice Beach.

43. What's your favorite song at the moment?
- Luke Ski's "Holding Out for Hiro" tribute.

44. Do you hate chocolate?
- Sweet Jesus, it's possible to hate chocolate? This does not compute.

45. Are you in college?
- Yes.

46. Do you need a boyfriend/girlfriend to be happy?
- No, certainly not. But I am quite happy with the one I've got.

47. If you could have any job what would it be?
- Super hero.

48. Are you easy to get along with?
- Meh, maybe. I can't judge for myself.

49. What is your favorite time of day?
- The mid to late afternoon. There's still light, it's not too hot, things are still open, and the nightlife is just about to begin.

50. Are you a generally happy person?
- Generally-speaking, sure. But generally-speaking I'm a lot of things.

Actually, True, I'm right with you on it. I always thought it was something about our primal urges and such.

Every weekend since that friggin' period has sucked so much. Last weekend I was unbelievably sick and this past one, the wisdom tooth I'd been meaning to have pulled that was growing into my cheek was making it damn near impossible to do anything without my face being in complete agony.

Had the tooth pulled this morning. Gonna take a bit to heal, but it's OUT!

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- It was a serious contribution to the electronic lexicon.

:-)

Twenty-five years ago, Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott E. Fahlman says, he was the first to use three keystrokes -- a colon followed by a hyphen and a parenthesis -- as a horizontal "smiley face" in a computer message.

To mark the anniversary Wednesday, Fahlman and his colleagues are starting an annual student contest for innovation in technology-assisted, person-to-person communication. The Smiley Award, sponsored by Yahoo Inc., carries a $500 cash prize.

Language experts say the smiley face and other emotional icons, known as emoticons, have given people a concise way in e-mail and other electronic messages of expressing sentiments that otherwise would be difficult to detect.

Fahlman posted the emoticon in a message to an online electronic bulletin board at 11:44 a.m. on September 19, 1982, during a discussion about the limits of online humor and how to denote comments meant to be taken lightly.

"I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: :-)," wrote Fahlman. "Read it sideways."

The suggestion gave computer users a way to convey humor or positive feelings with a smile -- or the opposite sentiments by reversing the parenthesis to form a frown.

Carnegie Mellon said Fahlman's smileys spread from its campus to other universities, then businesses and eventually around the world as the Internet gained popularity.

Computer science and linguistics professors contacted by The Associated Press said they were unaware of who first used the symbol.

"I've never seen any hard evidence that the :-) sequence was in use before my original post, and I've never run into anyone who actually claims to have invented it before I did," Fahlman wrote on the university's Web page dedicated to the smiley face. "But it's always possible that someone else had the same idea -- it's a simple and obvious idea, after all."

Variations, such as the "wink" that uses a semicolon, emerged later. And today people can hardly imagine using computer chat programs that don't translate keystrokes into colorful graphics, said Ryan Stansifer, a computer science professor at the Florida Institute of Technology.

"Now we have so much power, we don't settle for a colon-dash-paren," he said. "You want the smiley face, so all these chatting softwares have to have them."

Instant messaging programs often contain an array of faces intended to express emotions ranging from surprise to affection to embarrassment.

"It has been fascinating to watch this phenomenon grow from a little message I tossed off in 10 minutes to something that has spread all around the world," Fahlman was quoted as saying in a university statement. "I sometimes wonder how many millions of people have typed these characters, and how many have turned their heads to one side to view a smiley, in the 25 years since this all started."

Amy Weinberg, a University of Maryland linguist and computer scientist, said emoticons such as the smiley were "definitely creeping into the way, both in business and academia, people communicate."

"In terms of things that language processing does, you have to take them into account," she said. "If you're doing almost anything ... and you have a sentence that says 'I love my boss' and then there's a smiley face, you better not take that seriously."

Emoticons reflect the likely original purpose of language -- to enable people to express emotion, said Clifford Nass, a professor of communications at Stanford University. The emotion behind a written sentence may be hard to discern because emotion is often conveyed through tone of voice, he said.

"What emoticons do is essentially provide a mechanism to transmit emotion when you don't have the voice," Nass said.

In some ways, he added, they also give people "the ability not to think as hard about the words they're using."

Stansifer said the emoticon was part of a natural progression in communication.

"I don't think the smiley face was the beginning and the end," he said. "All people at all times take advantage of whatever means of communication they have."

Yay, :-) can finally rent a car!

Well ladybugs are really good for plants in that they eat any other insects that get in their way while not actually eating the pant itself.

Didn't realize they bite, but then again I make a point in leaving them alone.

Zoso is rather afraid of spiders. The other day he bought a can of Raid to take out a spider that was living on the window sill in the shower and last night, while walking home with me, he jumped in the street because the walkway ahead of us was topped by hanging arbors and tree branches and he didn't want to walk into any webs.

He clutched her, her face drenched from his salty tears and sweat.

She was dying. Oh heavens, was she dying.

He cradled her, pressing his lips to the nape of her neck as her head hung limply again.

No doctor or surgeon could save her. She'd been ravaged by the Disease. Unbeknownst to the sweet, star-crossed lovers, Tristan was a carrier of the rare, yet ultimately fatal infection. Though he called for emergency transport, they knew it would never get there in time and even if they did there wasn't anything that could be done.

Her usual rosy cheeks, pale. Her breathing labored at one moment, shallow the next. He shook his beloved.

"Don't die on me now! Felicia, wake up! Felicia?"

Her almond-brown eyes, unfocused, trailed from the ceiling to his face. Emotions exploded forth.

"Trist," her voice weak, barely over a husky whisper. "The Dis--"

"I know," he murmured. For all he tried, Tristan couldn't show any restraint to his weeping. He was ashamed that he couldn't be a man for her, that he couldn't find it in his soul to be strong. He hated himself.

With a shaking hand, Felicia reached up, combing her fingers through his dark hair, stroking his ear, smiling as warmly as she could muster. In that moment, Tristan's tears stopped.

He bent down to graze his lips over hers.

Seconds later, she was gone.

This is actually the first of many parts to come. I know what's going to happen in the next few parts. No, I don't have an end. And yes, I'm aware that the beginning is painfully cheesy. I seriously just wrote it right now and the story has several kinks that are going to need to be worked out.

EDIT: Had to fix a typo.

So I'm noticing this getting posted a whole lot more, but no one has a clue what it's about.

Damn. Perhaps it'll come to the surface in a couple months.

Going back several pages and not finding a thread for it (though I could have sworn that I or someone else made a thread for this movie before), I'm just restarting the topic here.

Southland Tales, being the upcoming second movie of Richard Kelly (creator of Donnie Darko), is finally scheduled to hit theaters soon despite the past conflicts and delays.

An "official" trailer has FINALLY hit the web: here

In the past couple years I've gone to a few events Richard Kelly attended and seen a few clips of the movie, with him explaining a few of the scenes and aspects that some might question in this trailer.

All you really need to know is it's an idea of what the not-too-distant future might hold--namely the apocalypse.
