It's worse than I thought, I was just going through my bank statement online and found an Amazon.com purchase that I don't remember making.

I was definitely the person who bought it. I just don't remember.

So the animal hospital sent Zoso's family a card which they received today. It had a cat and dog on the front with halos over their heads and a form apology printed inside that said something like, "We're sorry your pet had to pass away and you were probably close with it and we hope to do more business with you in the future."

The thought was nice, but the card felt so tacky.

So it's approaching the first completed week of the new year. Any changes yet?

Nothing new on my end, just finished Witches Abroad, read Anansi Boys, watched a few things I hadn't seen before and hung out with my friend and her new baby (pictures coming soon). It's been a pretty good, positive start.

How's everyone else?

You know... I think I've finally been pushed to signing that petition. Not that it wasn't something that I already believed in, but I just don't buy into 'net petitions.

While I was watching the extra poignant series finale of M*A*S*H, the one that airs so rarely because they have to get special permission from Alan Alda, and this big fuckin' logo comes up for some CSI-rip-off that's going to be canceled before the season's up anyway. During the final good-bye scene with Hawkeye and BJ, these people as tall as half the screen walk across the scene and hunch down, striking these ridiculous poses, by the show's name in the corner.

What the FUCK?!

Sorry to respond so late, I didn't have a fast enough computer that had sound.

Right now there's nothing on TV but all those televangelism programs.

Pressed play on the VCR, not caring whatever's in there, and it's "Mutiny on the Bounty" with Marlon Brando.

Little bit of an update.

Jayne and Christina (Kittybob) are doing well. I finally remembered to bring my camera when Zoso and I came to visit a few days ago.

JAYNE!

There was some discussion over whom she more closely resembled.

Jayson (also called Jess), the father? :

He's the blond in the leopard-print hat, looking at the camera.

Also not a great one of him, seeing as he's got make-up on, but I don't have many pics of him.

OR...

Christina :

Just after getting her new car. Taken in front of my house.

When Zoso answered the door wearing only a towel and I wanted to capture the moment.

My money's on Jayne looking much more like her mother.

I've lately been spending an exorbitant amount of time reading since I still have some time left of winter break and over the last school semester I didn't really have much time to read for fun because I had so much assigned reading for various classes.

So, just for shits, if you're reading anything, what is it? Novel? Manga? The paper? Penthouse?

Obviously you've read some part of this this post.

I'm going over an issue of Hopeless Savages. Just finished Anansi Boys, Witches Abroad, Brave New World, and Hardcore Zen.

Going to start Stardust today and have a ton of things coming in the mail over the next week from Amazon.

I'll come in with some pictures soon, I live in generally the same area as Elara.

Most of the people in our area, while living in the smaller towns near it, spend A LOT of time in Long Beach. I know I do. I live in Cerritos and I spend most of my week in Long Beach.

There and L.A. and the surrounding areas.

While I won't have as majestic photos as you, Truth and Belial, I'll see what I can bring.

In the meantime, here's my photos from the Dia de los Muertos festivals this last year. In Southern California, as can be expected being land that was once owned by Mexico and originally inhabited by many native peoples, we have a high indigenous population. California, while not having the glorious gothic buildings and colonial setting, has a very rich history of Mexican/Latin American culture. And I LOVE it!
Dia de los Muertos photos

Sorry about the vapor trails in a lot of the pictures.

Last week, I'd gone on a road trip to San Francisco with Zabuza to help him move into his apartment in San Jose. Since, in a few ways, I consider SF another place I'm from here's a couple photos.

My TV's been on all morning, mostly just as background noise. It's been an endless line-up for court TV shows. Right now it's Judge Joe Brown.

Hehe, sorry to keep posting. I've found more pictures that are loaded on my Flickr account that I want to put out there. I'm still going to go out there are take some pictures of where I'm from, but here's more for now:

On a side note, I think this thread should be in General or even Art. It's a rather cool idea and more people would see it and post to it there.

grunion001
Every spring through mid-summer, California gets something no other part of the world (except the Sea of Cortez) gets: grunion. On certain nights of the month, these little silvery fish come up at high tide and spawn. The females partially bury themselves and males come up and bukkake all over her while she's laying her eggs.

rotunda angels001
The rotunda at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, aside from the L.A. County Museum of Art, I'm constantly at the Natural History Museum.

So many movies are filmed in the rotunda (part of Spider-man, for example). This is just a ceiling shot, but in the center of the room is a statue of these angel-like muses who are holding up the sphered-lamp pictured above.

9-11 memorial002
At a 9-11 memorial service in Long Beach. Seriously, this is typical.

Alpine Village Oktoberfest
I'm throwing this one in there to express our mixed cultures getting excited about other cultures. I took this picture at the Oktoberfest a town over. I just love how all these different women were clambering to put money in the Oompa band members' socks.

More later. Heh, sorry. I know I'm lame, but I'm very excited about this thread.

Finished Stardust (I actually started it on Monday ), and am now halfway through Colour of Magic.

SPOILERS for some

I noticed that American Gods, Anansi Boys, and Stardust are very much alike.

In the cases of Shadow, Fat Charlie, and Tristran:
- They are sons of ethereal beings (well in Tristran's case, he's half Faerie).
- They have a true love who isn't exactly true to them (Laura, Rosie, Victoria).
- They tend to find other women along the way (Tristran has Yvaine, Charlie has Daisy, Shadow had Bast).
- They are unlucky underdogs.
- They're on figurative journeys for different reasons, but these journeys make them realize who/what they are.
- Their dreams tend to be interactions with other ethereal beings or divine places.

Granted Sandman, Good Omens, and "MirrorMask" don't follow this formula, and Neverwhere falls in there a little, pattern or not I still think Gaiman is a VERY talented storyteller.

Posted on 01-10-07 03:29 PM, in "College really isn't necessary" Link
This has been making its way around the 'net for a few months now and found its way onto LiveJournal. Figured I'd post it here too.

No one knows if this was a high school or college paper, but based on the atrocious writing, the typos and the fact that it has no evidence to back its radical claim while also not following AP-style, it reeks of small town high school press.

A few have suggested that this was a joke. I honestly don't think so. High schools are notorious (I know mine was) for printing things this bad, and in my experience there was probably an article that accompanies it for a "He said/she said" column.
