I return to this land as is my custom in a desperate need of help. We have recently had play auditions at my school. I have been doing small parts in the plays at our school since my freshman year. I have never had a major role and i was promised a major role in this play. I not only didn't get a major part, I got the one part in the whole play I didn't like, I have to play across from the one person in the whole show that I don't like, and a freshman who has never been heard before got the lead that I wanted. How should I respond to this? Is it wrong of me to be disappointed and depressed? Oi, I need some help.

Nothing wrong with being depressed. I was in a similiar position. At the end of my Freshman year of high school, the guy who ran the plays told me that he was trying to get the rights for "The Wizard of Oz" and that he was reserving the part of Dorothy for me if I was still interested. He basically said he wanted me to play her cuz he said I was plain looking. If he was serious, he didn't mean it in a bad way, so whatever...but it was going to take a few years for him to get the money together to pay for it. Woulda been the last play of our senior year. Long story short, he had to leave our school and other people took his place. One of the main people in charge is a woman who hates me. Why? Because she taught all my sisters in high school and automatically assumed that I was evil like them. (She did quite a few awful things my senior year...I lost a few scholarships as a result)

In the end, the play I graduated on was "Beauty and the Beast", which was freaking SPECTACULAR...everyone did extremely well in it. I, however, quit way before then because of similar circumstances that you are now experiencing.

Stick with it. Quitting the plays is one of my only regrets from high school. It sucks that things didn't go your way, and apparently you worked hard for it...but you'll get over the way you're feeling. I went from being excited about a cool part to being shoved into two scenes...but I got over it. Nothing wrong with being depressed, but it'll pass. Just don't quit. I know you didn't mention anything about quitting, but just in case you were thinking it. :p

It's a challenge. Challenges not only make you stronger once you've conquered them, they give you some great memories to look back on. Sure, they might not be pleasant, but think of all the fun you'll have working on the play.

Also where's the fun in doing only parts you like? This takes ACTING. Hell, do it right and it could turn into your best performance yet.

What play are you performing, and what part did you get?

I dunno man, i gotta say that i have done a ton and a half of plays and in every single one there is some utter bastard that trys to ruin the whole thing (and fails miserably due to everyone else maintaining a good attitude). Just focus on what your character feels and how you can communicate that within the work and i think you will find that other actor's personal issues wont matter as much as the scene itself when all is said and done.

(also: there are SO many theatre stories that involve people who hate each other, but when they are on stage that tension makes for a really badass scene)
