Philips wants to patent a series of new technologies that embed a digital signal that new TVs would respond to. You'd be unable to fast forward through commercials, or for that matter, change the channel or even turn off the TV short of unplugging it. While this may be great for advertisers, don't they realize we can still just walk away?

Not being able to turn off the TV would be a nuissance.

Lets say its late at night you want to go to bed and you're watching TV in your bedroom. A commercial comes on and you have no interest in watching anymore TV. The TV regects your want of shutting off the TV and continues to show the commercial.

I honestly do not think this patent will pass or even if its doees the product will not make much money since most people are not interested in commercials.

And since its philips only (I have not read the article yet) then you can just buy other TV brands and if they all give in then you can just not watch TV or get bootleg copies of your shows from the internet or pay for DVD boxsets from your local video store.

It helps to read the article. Since it's tech already built into major TVs (all brands), if it passes, it'll more than likely affect all of us.

Worst comes to worse you could always unplug the TV.

I doubt that this will get passed. It just seems to invasive.

with the tivo, i seriously cannot watch live tv anymore. once i've got forward, i cant go back. two minute tv commercials are too long. i find myself recording the show, instead of watching it, eventhough i could actually watch it there and be done with it. instead, i just channel surf, and watch my show later, just so i can have the opportunity to fast forward thru the commercials. or worst, i'd just be 10min late on purpose, and watch the recording, as the show is on live, so i'd have an extra leg room for the commercial.

Yeah, but the consumer market basically has no influence on this. Our biggest influence would be boycotting all TV altogether. And, that's not going to happen. Advertisers depend on us seeing their commercials, hearing them on the radio, seeing billboards, flipping over them in magazines, clicking through pop-ups, etc. I see big advertising firms backing this up 100% just to get their hard work actually noticed.

Hell, if I was a big advertising firm, I'd shell out the funding just to get this thing going.

But, I'm not. And, then again, I don't watch TV anymore.
