That's only a few miles away from us.... but it's kinda shocking to know that this can happen to just about anyone. Also I have to laugh at the reporter who did this story because I have found a few mistakes in the story and such that you might find

The link for it.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A teenager armed with a handgun shot and wounded a 16-year-old fellow student Thursday morning and then walked to a restaurant, where customers watched in horror as he stood outside and put the gun to his head.

The 14-year-old shooter then surrendered to police. He is not yet being identified but police said he is a freshman at Roseburg High School.

Students milling around the courtyard at the high school watched in shock as the teen -- using what doctors said was a large-caliber handgun -- shot a student in the chest and abdomen just before classes were to begin, hitting him four times.

The school was immediately locked down.

The shooter and the victim are students at the high school, said Detective Lt. Pat Moore of Roseburg Police Department.

The victim, a 16-year-old sophomore Joseph Monti, was last reported in serious but stable condition at Mercy Medical Center. He underwent a 3 1/2-hour surgery for three gunshots to the torso and one that grazed his elbow, according to hospital spokesman Vic Fresolone.

Fresolone said Monti was doing better than can be expected considering the bullet wounds. Since he is only 16, Fresolone said, "he can tolerate this better than the rest of us can."

Roseburg Police said the shooter opened fire around 7:45 a.m. in the courtyard of the school near the cafeteria. The suspect fled the area and police and emergency crews arrived at the scene within minutes.

"He was just walking like nothing was going on," said Kenny Russell, witness. "There were two cop cars behind him with their sirens going. He'd turn around and look at them and keep walking down the sidewalk."

As the gunman left the school, police said two students followed him.

"They challenged him, told him to stop, at which point he pulled the handgun out of his clothing and held the gun to his head as he continued to walk away," said Roseburg Police spokesman Sgt. Aaron Dunbar.

The suspect was cornered by police a couple of blocks away in front of a restaurant, said Dunbar. Witnesses said the gunman held a gun to his own head and threatened suicide, holding police in a brief 3-5 minute standoff.

“He stopped right in front of the diner and put the gun to his head, and my first instinct was he's not coming in here so I darted to the doors and locked up the doors,” said Russell.

The gunman surrendered minutes later without incident. Police led the suspect back to the crime scene later that afternoon.

Police were not releasing the identities of either the victim or the suspect and no motive for the shooting was disclosed.

Police said good planning helped keep a bad situation from getting worse.

"We followed the playbook exactly as planned," said Dunbar.

"This campus was absolutely secure within five minutes," said Lee Patterson, Roseburg Schools Superintendent.

The high school campus, along with a nearby elementary school, were in lockdown for an hour and a half. The lockdown ended at 9:15 a.m. and students were sent home for the day. About 2,000 students attend Roseburg High School.

Yeah, it was really cowardly. This kind of outrageous behavior is the reason why you can't even mention the word "gun" with invoking the wrath of SWAT personnel. I hope the kid gets all the help he needs, and that the kid that was shot makes a speedy recovery.

Wow, that is kinda sad, not just for the victim for for the shooter as well. I mean, there must be something seriously wrong with him to do something like this. I'm just glad that the kid that was shot was ok in the end.

Kinda scary to think though that this can jsut randomly happen without any apperent cause.
