Yes, this photo is real. It's not a computer-made drawing. It was taken by Cassini back in 2006, catching the nighttime side of Saturn with the sun's glow shining off the rings.

Hell yeah space is awesome.

I still think those pics of the sun from last year were awesome. But Saturn? Awww yes you gotta love space.

Then there's the Cat's Eye Nebula, all gathered around a dying star.

Agreed, space is awesome.

EDIT: This one was taken by the Hubble Telescope.

**stunned**

Funny, I've been reobsessed with looking into this stuff again, lately.

It DOES look computer generated, the shot of Saturn, but...makes it even cooler that it's not.

Yeah, it still looks insanely fake, but awesome.

The site Rogue linked is awesome, I always keep an eye on it off and on.

The image Nel posted didn't load this morning...

Ahahahahaha. Fucking awesome.

Edit: And honestly, when that right angle is caught, light DOES appear to bend that way around the bodies in space.

I showed this to like...everyone I could today. So awesome.

I love when people get excited about science, even if just for the fact that it's pretty at times.

Someone made this short music video using shots from Cassini of Saturn and the objects around it:

NASA posted this calling it a "Summer Night's Dream," saying the fireflies are like faeries. How whimsical of them.

Wish we had fireflies.

I love that we have fireflies here... but that picture kinda puts them to shame. How long was the exposure on this?

According to the original post, the guy who took it meant it to only be a 45-55 minute exposure, but passed out and came to 3 hours later to find the camera went until the battery died. Not sure how long it really went for.

Here's some more pictures NASA's posted:

The Trifid Nebula

And even though it's not space, it's still pretty damn awesome, a lightning storm in Athens, Greece:

Lighting storm wins! What? I like lightning.

Seriously though, I love the twinkling stars... so pretty.

And that guy took the best accidental photograph ever!

If you like lightning, have you seen the photo someone got of the Space Shuttle Endeavour on the launch pad before its final mission?

We had an incredibly lightning storm about five months ago. Killed about 17 people around my area that's how bad it was.

If you never experienced a crazy lightning storm it's awesome to watch especally if you have a porch thats made out of nothing but glass walls / windows.

Also, I have a major fear of lightning. When I have to run in the rain I literally run and have panic attacks. Lightning must suck and I don't want to have it happen to me.

Gonna be hella ironic if I die by lightning.

That picture is amazing!

And we've had some pretty epic thunderstorms here since we moved, and it is simply amazing. I love lighting and thunder, been that way since I was a small child... they tell me when I was three I called it "thunderlight" and that I'd get all excited whenever we were in a storm.
