Because we still want it to be believable. While it may be in the realm of fantasy, everything that is done is... shall we say, plausible. But the speed of light is impossible, and would destroy the universe.

I'm pretty sure that holds true for classical Newtonian physics, which is what was prefaced by the previous post, but that discounts quantum effects. But one need not be traveling at light speed to bend the space-time continuum, if I might note. But again, what is the point of bringing reality into a setting where reality is an absurd notion?
Sim-battling isn't even about winning, it's about having the strategy to make one's opponent give up, in a system of persuasion, pedantry, or any number of mind games. I think sim battling in many ways, is far more brutal than debate could ever be in that way.

I'll copy it from the book I'm reading:

I also learned in the modern physics course why nothing in the universe can exceed the speed of light. As the speed of an object increases, its mass increases. The reason for this can be found in the most famous equation of Einstein's special theory of relativity: E=mc(squared). Where E is the energy, m is the mass and c(squared) is the speed of light multiplied by itself. This equation says that if you apply energy to speed up an object, some of that energy goes into becoming part of the mass of the object. As the object gets more massive it becomes harder to speed it up. Eventually, it would take more energy than there is in the entire universe to get the object to go at the speed of light, which means we can never speed up an object to reach the speed of light. We can get close to the speed of light, but we can never reach or exceed it. The speed of light is the universe's maximum speed limit.

And I think that cars aren't getting bigger, because we are not putting much energy into them. I mean, what's a few miles per hour compared to near light speed? So maybe they are gaining mass, but so little that we will never notice.

I don't think you get it. The more energy you use, the more mass you acquire, which means you need more energy, which makes you acquire more mass. This makes in impossible to reach light speed, because there isn't enough energy...

How would you aquire more mass when you are using energy? You dont see cars get heavier when you drive or something....

That, to me, seems theoriticially possiable. However you have to look at aerodynamics, physics, and more importantly: How you can obtain such energy.

Bullets do indeed travel very fast, but (Getting off topic here) Mythbusters has busted that simple elements like water can easily desentergrate it...and seen how the body is made mostly of water, I take it that moving at such speeds could easily desentegrate you.

Physics show that the fastest humans often loose the most energy. I dont know the record of the fastest runner on the planet, but I do remember watching the history channel about this guy. He was able to breathe in more oxygen to keep his muscles sterle, but the muscle fibers in his legs and hips were overwhelmed with fatigue.

Obtaining that energy is energy however, but you have to look at things in other points on the matter.

Even tho I hardly ever RP, I thought I would say something about this

So, I have found clarification as to why the speed of light is unattainable.

Basically, it has to do with Einstein's formula E=MC2 (it's squared, so STFU).

Basically, the faster you go, the more energy you require. But some of that energy becomes part of that mass, meaning you need more energy to go faster, but then your mass increases, so you need more energy, then your mass increases, etc. until eventually you require more energy that exists in the universe.

Get it? Got it? Good.

Also, energy characters I think could do it without a problem. If I can just ffind a way to get my fire person to move without its generator, I'd be able to.

Both of those types of characters are not allowed in simbattle. So it doesn't really matter.

FX... never talk again.... This is so freaking old... it's just there for general advisement...

Feel free to be a retard with your light speed characters all you want. We'll just make fun of you for it.

(( Hey, this is the RP section, yo... I can post))

They mean that a body wouldn't be able to withstand such force. Not that they're human. This rule applies for cyborgs, elves, ghosts, clowns, and your mom too.

eh...if your body is is a mix of energy in a semi liquid form...that can focus to become solid when you want..I dont think you have to worry. But that really woudnt be human any longer now would it?

My character is a little different than the average human. Due to a ritual he took to become a Terra Knight, he has the ability to focus on his body and the earth. And such, he has an incredible focus, due to his training and rituals.

You super-charge every molecule in your body with electricity....

A: Yes, they would contain a lot of energy. And yes, energy can travel extremely fast. However..if movement was independant, the air current the bullet itself created would rip you to pieces. You would need to focus on generating the energy AND binding each cell..this defeats the purpose.

But at least it is a decent explanation. Personally, i wouldn't call the theory itself out in a sim.

Would i would point out is that you would fry every cell in your body in the process. There is no way a human being can withstand that much electrical current. It cannot generate it on it's own..and channeling it from an outside source would kill you instantly.

Assuming you are 100% base human.

Yeah..you'd explode, or be blown into nothingness. Really..there's no way to focus on both the movement and keeping your cells together using a human.

I actually have a different way of reaching the speed of light, other than gathering ridiculous amounts of energy into myself (which I can do as well). You see, Sparda is capable of two unique mental abilities: telekinesis and alchemy. Mind you, this alchemy is not that bullshit FMA made and screwed up. For all you people who watch FMA, that is NOT alchemy.

Alchemy is basically the evolution or de-evolution of an item or being by means of pure concentration and bonding between two life or energy forces. Through the sacrifice of all of Sparda's psychic powers (not permanent, mind you) in turn for the purest of concentration as well as the usage of a great portion of energy (but not as much energy required for the first method), Sparda is able to temporarily change himself into 'light' per say for only a half a second. However, considering how fast light travels, it would more than suffice.

I'm still working on this technique however. If you see a flaw from the description I gave, I would openly welcome CC.

Well, as it was said, the human body can't take those speeds. My theory was a way to move almost as fast as light, and keep the body intact. To do that, I would need to dissintagrate. BUT, I can't turn into a gas. So, I invented this method. ^.^

The way you discribe it, it sounds more like you will spontaniously combust (sp?) then move at light speeds o.O

I would have more than a millisecond. I could see the gun and start moving then, giving me time. Two, if each molecule was charged so that the cells were pushed a tad apart, they would be moving indepentendly, but still keep my shape. I would look a little fizzy for a second. And besides, energy moves very fast, because it's light to a degree. I think. Right?

What you just said is:

You have to power to charge your cells in less then a milisecond it would take for the bullet to leave the chamber, and slam into you, and somehow have your cells still give otu an electrical impuse fast enough to tweak your body to the side, ignoring the G force that happens regardless?

o.O
